CACB 2005 Activities Report

Scientific Activities

The Twentieth Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Sciences (2005) was held on March 26-27, 2005.  This joint conference consists of a total of seven scientific societies, including Chinese Association for Clinical Biochemistry, Toxicology Society of Taiwan, The Chinese Physiological Society, The Pharmacological Society in Taiwan, The Association of Anatomists of the Republic of China, The Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The Chinese Society of Cell and Molecular Biology. By rotation, the annual meeting is organized by one of the seven societies yearly.  This year (2005), CACB has the honor to organize and to host the annual meeting and it turns out to be an impressive and successful scientific gathering for the researchers from all over the country to exchange their scientific ideas and to share the scientific results with their peers.  A total of 924 abstracts had been received for this annual meeting, and among them 93 were selected for oral presentations.  It is noteworthy to mention here that the highlight of this meeting is its poster sections.  These sections were actually well attended by the graduate students and the exchange of ideals and critics were extremely active and stimulating.  Also, a panel of referee was organized to select the candidates for best poster award and the winner was awarded a prize money of 200USD.  In addition, CACB had invited a world renowned molecular biologist Dr. Y. M. Dennis Lo from the Department of Chemical Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to serve as its keynote speaker. Dr. Lo spoke on the subject of Biology and Diagnostic Application of Cell-free Nucleic Acid in Plasma.  The presentation was excellent and the audience were impressive with his research accomplishments.

CACB 2006 Activities Report

Scientific Activities:

Under the joint auspice of CACB and Bio-Rad, a workshop entitled” Quality Control and Laboratory Accreditation” was held at the National Taiwan University on October 1, 2005. Professor Greg Cooper was the keynote speaker and spoke on two lectures: (1) ISO 15189 and (2) How to meet accreditation requirements for QC. Several local speakers also participated and spoke on the topic dealing with: (1) Pitfalls of the Laboratory Practice; (2) Test Uncertainty and (3) How to execute Internal Audits and Management. The workshop was well attended and the interaction between the audience and the speakers were active.

The 21th Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science (2006) was held on March 18-19, 2006. By rotation, the Toxicology Society of Taiwan was responsible for organizing this year’s meeting CACB had the honor of inviting Dr. C.W. K. Lam from the Department of Chemical Pathology. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Price of Wales Hospital, Shatin, HK to serve as the keynote speaker for CACB. Dr. Lam spoke on the subject “ The Laboratory Medicine of Infections Disease.” The presentation was excellent and the audience were impressed with his research accomplishment (see attached photo).

In a separate occasion, CACB has the honor of sponsoring another workshop on the subject of quality assurance on April 1, 2006. Dr. James Westgard, a world renowned expert in Laboratory QC, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Westgard was having a lecturing tour of Asia and his visit of Taiwan was the last stop of his lecturing tour. In this workshop, Dr. Westgard had given three lectures, including (1) Correct application of Westgard rules; (2) Points of care in managing QC for Laboratory Tests and (3) the Truth about Quality Today. The lectures were well attended and his excellent presentations were appreciated by the audience. The local speakers who participated in the lectures including Professor Hsieh, CACB president (Taiwan) who spoke on the subject dealing with QC for CRP and hs-CRP” and Professor Wu from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital who also spoke on the subject of the Management of POCT tests in Hospital.
