Scientific Activities

The Twentieth Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Sciences (2005) was held on March 26-27, 2005.  This joint conference consists of a total of seven scientific societies, including Chinese Association for Clinical Biochemistry, Toxicology Society of Taiwan, The Chinese Physiological Society, The Pharmacological Society in Taiwan, The Association of Anatomists of the Republic of China, The Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The Chinese Society of Cell and Molecular Biology. By rotation, the annual meeting is organized by one of the seven societies yearly.  This year (2005), CACB has the honor to organize and to host the annual meeting and it turns out to be an impressive and successful scientific gathering for the researchers from all over the country to exchange their scientific ideas and to share the scientific results with their peers.  A total of 924 abstracts had been received for this annual meeting, and among them 93 were selected for oral presentations.  It is noteworthy to mention here that the highlight of this meeting is its poster sections.  These sections were actually well attended by the graduate students and the exchange of ideals and critics were extremely active and stimulating.  Also, a panel of referee was organized to select the candidates for best poster award and the winner was awarded a prize money of 200USD.  In addition, CACB had invited a world renowned molecular biologist Dr. Y. M. Dennis Lo from the Department of Chemical Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to serve as its keynote speaker. Dr. Lo spoke on the subject of Biology and Diagnostic Application of Cell-free Nucleic Acid in Plasma.  The presentation was excellent and the audience were impressive with his research accomplishments.

Dr. Wu spoke on Recent Advances in Cardiac Markers. As a world renowned expert in this field, Dr. Wu present an excellent review on various cardiac markers that are currently utilized all over the world and a few newly developed tests that may have a great impact on the medical world. The lecture was excellently presented and well attended. During the afternoon section , CACB also organized a symposium focusing on “Proteomics and Biomarkers”. Professor S.C. Shieh presented ”Proteomic Analysis of Human Bile for Biomarker Discovery“, Professor S.L. Yu spoke on “From Genomics to Proteomics “Discovery of Novel Tumor Suppressor“, Professor T.Z. Liu spoke on “Proteomic characterization of Protein Markers Relevant to Differentiation status of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells and Professor T.L. Pan spoke on “Investigation of serum Protein profile on Down’s Syndrome Using Redox Proteomics Following the symposium, a student’s research poster contest was also held.
