Activities:

The 19th Annual Conference of Biomedical Science held April 10-11 2004 wherein a special lecture about Monogenic disease in endocrinology was given by Prof. Tjin-Shing Jap, in a session hosted by Prof. Shu-Chu Shieh.

On the same event a Symposium on the Recent Development on Biomarker Research was held and hosted by Prof. Tzan-Ron Liu where interesting topics were shared by representatives from different medical institutions.

CACB 2005 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities

    The Twentieth Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Sciences (2005) was held on March 26-27, 2005.  This joint conference consists of a total of seven scientific societies, including Chinese Association for Clinical Biochemistry, Toxicology Society of Taiwan, The Chinese Physiological Society, The Pharmacological Society in Taiwan, The Association of Anatomists of the Republic of China, The Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The Chinese Society of Cell and Molecular Biology. By rotation, the annual meeting is organized by one of the seven societies yearly.  This year (2005), CACB has the honor to organize and to host the annual meeting and it turns out to be an impressive and successful scientific gathering for the researchers from all over the country to exchange their scientific ideas and to share the scientific results with their peers.  A total of 924 abstracts had been received for this annual meeting, and among them 93 were selected for oral presentations.  It is noteworthy to mention here that the highlight of this meeting is its poster sections.  These sections were actually well attended by the graduate students and the exchange of ideals and critics were extremely active and stimulating.  Also, a panel of referee was organized to select the candidates for best poster award and the winner was awarded a prize money of 200USD.  In addition, CACB had invited a world renowned molecular biologist Dr. Y. M. Dennis Lo from the Department of Chemical Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to serve as its keynote speaker. Dr. Lo spoke on the subject of Biology and Diagnostic Application of Cell-free Nucleic Acid in Plasma.  The presentation was excellent and the audience were impressive with his research accomplishments.

CACB 2006 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

    Under the joint auspice of CACB and Bio-Rad, a workshop entitled” Quality Control and Laboratory Accreditation” was held at the National Taiwan University on October 1, 2005. Professor Greg Cooper was the keynote speaker and spoke on two lectures: (1) ISO 15189 and (2) How to meet accreditation requirements for QC. Several local speakers also participated and spoke on the topic dealing with: (1) Pitfalls of the Laboratory Practice; (2) Test Uncertainty and (3) How to execute Internal Audits and Management. The workshop was well attended and the interaction between the audience and the speakers were active.

    The 21th Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science (2006) was held on March 18-19, 2006. By rotation, the Toxicology Society of Taiwan was responsible for organizing this year’s meeting CACB had the honor of inviting Dr. C.W. K. Lam from the Department of Chemical Pathology. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Price of Wales Hospital, Shatin, HK to serve as the keynote speaker for CACB. Dr. Lam spoke on the subject “ The Laboratory Medicine of Infections Disease.” The presentation was excellent and the audience were impressed with his research accomplishment (see attached photo).

In a separate occasion, CACB has the honor of sponsoring another workshop on the subject of quality assurance on April 1, 2006. Dr. James Westgard, a world renowned expert in Laboratory QC, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Westgard was having a lecturing tour of Asia and his visit of Taiwan was the last stop of his lecturing tour. In this workshop, Dr. Westgard had given three lectures, including (1) Correct application of Westgard rules; (2) Points of care in managing QC for Laboratory Tests and (3) the Truth about Quality Today. The lectures were well attended and his excellent presentations were appreciated by the audience. The local speakers who participated in the lectures including Professor Hsieh, CACB president (Taiwan) who spoke on the subject dealing with QC for CRP and hs-CRP” and Professor Wu from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital who also spoke on the subject of the Management of POCT tests in Hospital.

CACB 2007 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

The year of 2007 will be a special milestone for the Chinese Association for Clinical Chemistry (CACB) in celebrating its 25th anniversary since the establishment of this academic society in 1982. Nowadays, CACB, with its 220 active members is actively participating in diverse academic activities both domestically and internationally. As usual, 2006 was a busy and fruitful year for CACB. The following are some of the highlights of our activities. First, the 9th official election of the new council member and auditors was held on November 20, 2006. Professor Hsieh was re-elected as the President of CACB. Dr. Lai was again appointed as the Secretary of our organization.

CACB 2008 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

This brief report summarizes some of the highlights of activities for CACB during the Year of 2007. Frist, as one of the founding members of the Joint Society of Biomedical Sciences of Taiwan, members of CACB have once again voluntarily participated in the 22nd Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science which was held at the National Defense Medical University Campus on March 17~18 , 2007. At this conference, our Keynote speaker was Dr. Alan Wu, Chief, Division of clinical Chemistry, Department of Laboratory Medicine, San Francisco, CA, USA. Dr. Wu spoke on Recent Advances in Cardiac Markers. As a world renowned expert in this field, Dr. Wu present an excellent review on various cardiac markers that are currently utilized all over the world and a few newly developed tests that may have a great impact on the medical world. The lecture was excellently presented and well attended. During the afternoon section , CACB also organized a symposium focusing on “Proteomics and Biomarkers”. Professor S.C. Shieh presented ”Proteomic Analysis of Human Bile for Biomarker Discovery“, Professor S.L. Yu spoke on “From Genomics to Proteomics “Discovery of Novel Tumor Suppressor“, Professor T.Z. Liu spoke on “Proteomic characterization of Protein Markers Relevant to Differentiation status of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells and Professor T.L. Pan spoke on “Investigation of serum Protein profile on Down’s Syndrome Using Redox Proteomics Following the symposium, a student’s research poster contest was also held. Overall , the two day conference was very successful and truly an enjoyable academic gathering for the attending members of CACB. The 11th Asian Pacific Conference on clinical Biochemistry was held at Peking on Oct 15~19, 2007. CACB had organized a symposium and the four invited speakers presented their research efforts in the symposium included:(1)Rapid detection of low abundant mutation and its application on cancer diagnosis (by C.C. Chiou ), (2)Genetic test: mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (by T.S. Jap), (3)Role of oxidative stress status in the modulation of metastatic propensity of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells by T.Z. Liu and (4)Biomarkers of essential hypertension(by J.S. Wei). Finally Professor Rita Horvath, a IFCC traveling lecturer, presented a workshop on “Evidence-based Laboratory Medicine” on October 24, 2007 here in Taipei. The lecture was well-attended and we appreciated Dr. Horvath’s excellent presentation.

CACB 2009 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

This brief report highlights the activities of CACB in the year of 2008.

CACB, as one of the founding members of the Joint Society of Biomedical Sciences of Taiwan, participated in the 23rd Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science which took place from March 29th to 30th, 2008, at the National Defense Medical University, Taipei.

During the annual meeting, the CACB members including student’s members were welcome by the President Shu-Chu Shiesh and our Keynote speaker, Dr. Lai, Associate Dean of National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, spoke on “THE TREND OF LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEMS”. As a famous expert in this field, Dr. Lai presented an excellent review on various systems that are currently utilized all over the world and a few newly developed tests that may have a great impact on the medical laboratory science. The lecture was excellently presented and well attended. For the afternoon section, CACB organized a symposium focusing on “PERSONALIZED LABORATORY MEDICINE”. Past President of CACB, Prof. Jau-Tsuen Kao organized and chaired the session. There were four distinguished speakers in the symposium: Dr. Shiou-Jiuan Tsai from Roche Diagnostics spoke on ”Progress, challenges and opportunities for personalized healthcare”; Dr. Ming-Da Lee from National Genotyping Center spoke on “Translational medicine: the application of SNPs in clinical practice”; Professor Chin-Sun Huang from central Taiwan University of Science and Technology spoke on “Effect of detoxification protein genes upon therapeutic outcome and adverse drug reaction”; and Dr. Jeng-Shu Wei from Chang Gung University spoke on “Personalized medicine fro hypertension”. A students’ research poster contest was also held and 2008 Best Poster Award winners went to Ms. Wen-Ching Tsau and Mr. Cheng-Po Huang, both from the Institute of Clinical Laboratory Science and Medical Biotechnology at the National Taiwan University. Overall, the two-day annual meeting was successful and truly a fruitful academic gathering for the CACB members.

The IFCC Visiting Lecturer of 2008 Prof. M. Panteghini visited Taipei and gave two lectures at the workshop “Clinical Laboratory Consultation: Standardization, Interpretation and Communication” on September 1, 2008. We partnered with the Taiwan Society of Laboratory Medicine (TSLM) to organize the workshop. Prof. Panteghini presented “Traceability, reference systems and result comparability” and “Cardiac biomarker interpretation”. Four lectures were presented by the local scholars, including President of TSLM, Prof. Chu-Lan Wu “Communication models between the clinical laboratories and the clinical staffs”; Prof. Chin-Sun HuangAfter-service of laboratory tests”; Prof. Shu-Chu ShieshEvidence-based laboratory consultation”; and Dr. Dr. Tjin-Shing Jap “Estimated GFR”. The workshop was wrapped up with a closing remarks by Prof. Panteghini and President of TSLM, Prof. Wu. The workshop was well-attended and we appreciated Prof. Panteghini’s excellent presentation and interactive discussion with our members.

The 20th International Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (ICCC) was held on Sept. 28~Oct. 2 in Fortaleza, Brazil. Our student member, Chi-Ya Kao, who is in the first year of the Master program at the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, received the Roche/IFCC Travel Scholarship 2008 to participate this international conference. It is an invaluable experience for our young scientist-to-be. We would like to express sincere gratitude to IFCC for the opportunity and support.

CACB 2010 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

Several activities completed a fruitful year 2010 for the CACB, Taiwan.  Between the year 2009 to 2010, during the 24th Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science hosted by the then President Shu-Chu Shiesh in the National Defense Medical Institute on Mar., 2009, a distinguished professor Mr. Gwo-Bin Lee from the National Cheng Kung University gave an informative presentation on “ A new microfluidic platform technology for fast diagnosis” enlightening the listeners on a new technology for diagnostic testing.  On the same event, Dr. Po-Hsun Cheng talked about information technology that is very useful to the present operations in laboratories – “ The Adopting Trend for Information Technology on Laboratory Automation Systems”.

 

Election of new set of officers by the members of the association was held on Nov., 2009, with the unanimous choice of Dr. Min-Long Lai as the new President.    

During the 25th Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science held this year, Prof. Parameswaran, Venkateswaran, an expert in Diabetes and Endocrinology from the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania, Australia was invited to share his valuable experiences in the changes hormone testing methods, from using the radio-immunoassay methods to the present new technology of hormone testing which contributed greatly to endocrinological practices.

 

On October of this year during the , Prof. Shu-Chu Shieh, and Prof. Tjin-Shing Jap headed for Seoul, Korea to attend the 12th Asian-Pacific Congress of Clinical Biochemistry in representing the association in bidding for the hosting of the 14th Asian-Pacific Congress of Clinical Biochemistry and came back with the good news of hosting the event in the year 2016.  And also on this occasion, Prof. Shu-Chu Shieh talked about the “Influence of Gender and Pituitary Hormones on Steroidogenesis”, while Prof. Tjin-Shing Jap shared his knowledge regarding the “Genetic analysis in Lipid disorders”.

 

With the support of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, it will be the first time for Taiwan to host this international event gathering several respected speakers from whole of Asia. Through this important upcoming event, Dr. Lai will be working with all the members of the association in bringing and upgrading the standards in this domain.

CACB 2011 Activities Report

 

Scientific Activities:

One year ends, opening for another year of learning, continuing the quest for new discoveries, CACB on the year 2011 had its annual conference held on March 19th at the National Defense Medical University, Taipei.  During the 26th Joint Annual Conference of Biomedical Science, distinguished speakers talked mainly on Genomic Medicine, Dr. Joe-Yuan Howard Doong, Ph.D from TrimGen Corporation and University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute gave a very informative lecture regarding KRAS & BRAF Mutation - “From Whole Genomic Sequencing to Molecular Diagnostics-A Study of KRAS & BRAF Mutation Detection”.  While Dr. Tu, Ph.D. from Roche Diagnostics Taiwan also shared information regarding their product thru his “Roche 454 Sequencing-enabling NextGen Technology for Biological and Clinical Research” and Dr. Jeongsun Seo, M.D., Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ILCHUN Genomic Medicine Institute, Seoul National University College of Medicine shared his insights with his lecture ” Massively Parallel Sequencing Technologies Have Enabled High-throughput Detection of a Broad Spectrum of Variants in the Human Genome”.  NTUH’s Associate Professor Yu Sung-Liang from the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Medical Biotechnology updated about cancer with his “Discovery of Novel Genomic Alterations in a Multiplex Lung Cancer Family”.  Alighting students and professionals regarding the new whole genome sequencing and its clinical diagnostics application, the speakers shared their new knowledge to students and professionals as well.

 

CACB did not keep idle, during the middle of the year, another symposium was conducted, this time it was a joint symposium of the National Taiwan University (NTU) and University of Southern California (USC) on July 9th, featuring Frontiers in Liver Disease Research.  Several respected speakers from the USC joined and contributed to a interesting event, Dr. Hidekazu Tsukamoto talked about “Epigenetic regulation of hepatic stellate cells in liver fibrosis, regeneration, and cancer”, Dr. Jun Xu presented an informative talk on “Notch signaling in macrophage M1 activation in steatohepatitis” while Dr. Keigo Machida introduced about “ TLR4/Nanog-dependent tumor-initiating stem cells in the genesis of hepatocellular carcinoma”.  Coming from University of Hong Kong, Dr. Jack Chun-ming Wong enhanced the audience with “Molecular genetics and cell signaling of liver cancer”.  Representing Taiwan are speakers from NTUH Department of External Medicine, Liver cancer center, Dr. Huang Kai-Wen, PhD talked about “ Translational research of liver fibrosis”, while Dr. Wu Huey-Lin, PhD shared her views on :”Animal models for studying liver diseases”.  From the Academia Sinica’s Biology research center, Dr. Chen Shi-Long, PhD featured “Autophagy as a novel guardian against HCV from antiviral innate immune response”, and Dr. Yang Ying talked about “What's new in diagnosis and prognosis of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and carcinoma”.  It was indeed a fruitful day enriching the listeners mind and leading them to new issues regarding research in liver diseases.

Dr. Min-Long Lai also attended and shared his experiences in Cross-strait academic activities when he talked about “Management of Community Medical Laboratories in Taiwan” during the 11th Fookien Medical Laboratory Association in Fookien China held last October 15.

 

And also this year, CACB is pushing a drive to implement Professional Clinical Chemistry Medical Technologist which is aimed at promoting research studies in the field of Clinical Chemistry, its development and application, to improve quality of medical service and upgrade the citizen’s health.

 

Several contributions from the CACB members made it possible to complete these memorable events, together with this year’s President Dr. Lai, the Secretary General Mr. Jun-Jen Liu, an Associate Professor from the Taipei Medical University, Professor Shwu-Bin Lin, from NTU Laboratory Sciences and Medical Biotechnology, College of Medicine, Mr. Ming-Yi Chung, also from NTUH and Cheng-Kuang Lee Sam acting as Secretaries devoted much of their time in accomplishing the year’s academic activities.  And also in preparing for the upcoming big event in the year 2016, the14th Asian-Pacific Congress of Clinical Biochemistry, which CACB will be hosting here in Taiwan.  We welcome our valued members to attend, hope to see everyone and share with us to make it memorable.
